Crypto security, account recovery, and inheritance with Legacy

Security and inheritance are at the heart of Legacy. Here you’ll learn how we protect your assets, safeguard your private keys, and ensure your loved ones can securely inherit your crypto when the time comes. From account recovery to beneficiary setup, these articles guide you through everything you need to know.

Does Legacy ever take custody of my crypto or private keys?
No. Legacy is fully non-custodial. You can export your Secret Recovery Phrase from the Settings page.

What if I lose my phone or access to my Legacy account? Can I recover it?

Yes. You can recover access with your email and 2FA.
If you lose access to your email, Legacy is not able to recover your account.

How does Legacy keep my assets and personal data secure?

Legacy uses audited smart contracts, encryption, and secure key management. Because it’s non-custodial, even if Legacy was hacked, your assets remain in your control.

What happens to my crypto on Legacy if I die or become incapacitated?

If you have Legacy Inheritance enabled, your assets will be transferred to your chosen beneficiary once a valid death certificate is provided and verified.

Can I add a beneficiary to my Legacy account to receive my assets?

Yes. You can securely designate a beneficiary in the app. They cannot access your assets until the inheritance process is triggered.

Can I add multiple beneficiaries to my Legacy account to receive my assets?

Not yet but we’ll be implementing this feature soon.

Will my beneficiary be able to access my assets while I’m still alive?

No. Beneficiaries cannot access your funds until Legacy has verified your death certificate.

How will my beneficiary claim the assets when the time comes, and will they need to provide a death certificate or other proof?

Yes. Beneficiaries submit a death certificate (and in some cases additional documents) through Legacy. Once verified, the assets are automatically transferred to them.

Do I still need a legal will or trust if I use Legacy’s inheritance feature?

Legacy handles the transfer of your crypto assets, but it does not replace a full estate plan. We recommend using it alongside a legal will or trust for complete coverage.
